RON MUECK EXHIBITION

Christchurch Art Gallery - Opened 2nd October, 2010.

Our guests who have seen this exhibition have been very impressed with Ron Mueck's incredible Hyperrealist sculptures and all the newspaper reviews have been good. Proving to be very popular.

Ron Mueck was born in 1958 in Melbourne, Australia. His parents were toy makers so as a child he participated in the creation of puppets and costumes. With no other formal art education, Mueck was able to establish a career making models for film and television inc luding Labyrinth and puppets for Sesame Street. Mueck then established his own production company in London, making photo-realistic props and animatronics for the advertising industry.

Since 1996, Mueck has devoted himself full-time to his art. Though incredibly lifelike, his pieces are always either smaller than life-size or enormous. Mueck has used fibreglass to create his sculptures and has started using silicone, a more flexible material that is easier to shape.

Mueck's works are detailed down to the last mole, the last wrinkle, and the last stubble of hair. The technical skill required to produce such intricate sculptures is mind-boggling. But even from a photograph, the power of his sculptures lies not only in the detail or scale but in the emotions his characters convey - vulnerability, loneliness, boredom - the emotions of every day life.

Mueck has had a number of solo and group exhibitions around the world.

Milano Motor Lodge, 87 Papanui Road, Merivale, Christchurch has accommodation during the time of the exhibition and is within walking distance of the Christchurch Art Gallery, so why not come to Christchurch, enjoy the atmosphere of the city over the next couple of months. Phone and book while the exhibition is fresh in your mind. You may be able to combine it with the New Zealand Racing and Show Week festivities or perhaps take some time to begin your Christmas shopping.

We would love to have you stay with us and Christchurch is keen to welcome visitors to our lovely city which is rising above the earthquake we have had and is showing signs of repairing and getting back to normal. Do consider coming!!
